5739 - the 34th SWT refurbished 455 into service

5739 at Kingston on the 5th June 5739 at Chart Leacon - refurbishment almost complete
The refurbishment programme of South West Trains' class 455/7 fleet continues apace.  5739 was the 34th unit to be refurbished, being sent to Chart Leacon on the 6th April 2006 and returned to Wimbledon Park on the 26th May.  Monday June 5th 2006 was the unit's first day in service in its new finery working diagram WM650 coupled to 5709.  The unit is seen here (above left) on that day at Kingston with the 14.19 anti-clockwise "roundabout" service to Waterloo via Wimbledon (photograph by Colin Duff) and (above right) a few weeks earlier being worked on at Chart Leacon (photograph by Mike Cook).

SWT mixed 455 formations on the increase?

When South West Trains first introduced their refurbished class 455s they endeavoured to run them only with other refurbished units. Though this was thought to be only for "image" purposes (and if running with a unit in original condition to prevent overcrowding in one unit due to passengers preferring the accommodation in one over the other) as there is no technical nor operation reason why a refurbished 455 cannot run with an original unit. However, pairings of refurbished and original units happened and observers have noticed an increase in the number of such pairings during mid 2006.

On Monday 19th June 2006 four pairings were observed (refurbished/original): 5716+5910, 5719+5866, 5739+5854 (seen above centre approaching Clapham Junction on the Windsor lines, photograph by Colin Duff) and 5734+5860 (seen above left at Waterloo having worked the 08.58 service from Guildford via Epsom, photograph by Ian Docwra)
