Hastings to Bournemouth with a "diet Thumper" |
| On Saturday 28th June Hastings Diesels Limited's unit undertook its first passenger carrying service since work to fit central door locking. This was a private charter by First GBRf to take their staff on an outing to Bournemouth, with various pick-ups on the way from Hastings to Bournemouth. The train was driven by First GBRf staff but operating under the safety case and supervision of West Coast Railways. Colin Watts was with the train from Hastings Diesels Limited's St. Leonards depot to South West Trains' Bournemouth T&RSMD and unless otherwise credited the following pictures and text are his. |

Idling in anticipation, 1001 waits the ‘off’ from St Leonard’s depot. Although the journey was timed for 1001’s 75 mph certified main line speed, the set is more than capable of 90 mph running. |

Having collected its first passengers from Hastings, 1001 awaits 'right time’. Thanks are due to the expertise of both First GBRf and West Coast Railways. |

The superb 1st class interior of power car “Tunbridge Wells”. The power cars are unsurprisingly highly popular with the passengers |

As 1001 passed across from the South Eastern to the South Western section the V.S.O.E. set ambled slowly passed by sandwiched between two modern diesel locomotives. Interestingly few in the Hastings set expressed any desire to change trains! |

For the passengers, Bournemouth was the final destination; many headed for the seafront whilst others sought out pubs. |
